Brian Matthews became known in tech for cofounding the fantasy-sports company CDM Sports in 1991, which Fun Technologies acquired in 2006 for about $10 million. Matthews, who left CDM in 2010, has run the early-stage fund Cultivation Capital since 2012 and is one of the most successful seed investors outside of coastal hubs like Silicon Valley or New York City. He led his fund’s investment in the hotel-management software startup Cloudbeds, which raised a $150 million round in November. Matthews said he looked for high-integrity founders when investing at the seed stage: “The most important characteristic in a founder is their Integrity. Integrity toward employees and investors.”
